Upon returning from spring break in April, the 5th and 6th grade TMS students set out on a 45 mile canoe expedition down the Green River through Labyrinth Canyon, Utah.  Before departing on the expedition, students made a visit to the John Wesley Powell River History Museum in Green River, Utah, in order to learn more about the history and geology of the surrounding area.  

After camping at Green River State Park, students outfitted at Tex’s Riverways and were dropped off at their launch site in Ruby Ranch.  Over the five day trip, the students developed not only their understanding of ecology and paddling skills, but also their teamwork as they averaged nearly 12 miles a day.

Highlights of the trip included lessons from renowned author Craig Childs on the Colorado Plateau’s geology and canyon formation, a day hike up Bowknot Bend, and backcountry nights illuminated by a full moon.  So that our memories wouldn’t fade as quickly as our desert tans and paddle-calloused hands, we filled our journals with reflections, watercolor paintings, and stories from our trip.

From cooking nutritious meals to rigging boats, the students participated in all aspects of the expedition. They learned to put their own desires aside and help take care of the group. In short, they learned what it means to be part of a successful expedition.
