This spring, the ninth and tenth grade class traveled to Puerto Rico for their Experiential Education trip; the theme this year was service learning.  The students partnered with the organization, “Global Works” to help rebuild homes destroyed by hurricane Maria in the community of Villa del Rio, 45 minutes west of San Juan.   

The majority of the service work involved mixing and pouring concrete, along with bricklaying to reinforce the foundational structures of the homes.  The students completed an additional day of service work at “Las Casas de La Selva”, a sustainable forestry and rainforest enrichment project just outside of El Yunque rainforest.

While the majority of our time spent in Puerto Rico was focused on service work, the students also spent a day touring Old San Juan and El Morro, along with another day in El Yunque rainforest and the beaches of Luquillo.

 This was the first Telluride Mountain School trip that was fully service based, and proved to be a big hit among students and teachers. In the words of TMS ninth grade student, Cassidy Craige “It was an amazing opportunity to give-back and make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
