The first and second grade Telluride Mountain School students embarked on their first outdoor education trip of the year. Students visited two local farms, the Telluride Farmer’s Market, and nestled in for a midweek, overnight stay at the school.

Science studies at the beginning of the year focused on local food sources and conservation which tied in nicely to this experiential trip. With a total of three, day trips throughout the excursion, first and second graders gained exposure to various plants and methods of sustainability.

At Indian Ridge students learned garden etiquette and the basic needs of a plant. Additionally, students learned about the effects of climate in seasons of drought.

The fall harvest included; wheat, nightshade vegetables, and root vegetables. On the second day trip to Tomten Farms, students participated in hands on activities of gathering wild herbs and picking potatoes.

conservation efforts were observed through rainfall runoff, micro farming, and solar panels. The trip came full circle with a visit to the Telluride Farmer’s Market where students were able to visit both farm stands and purchase local goods.
