This year, a group of nine Upper School students completed a service project for their fall outdoor education trip. The students traveled to the Uncompahgre plateau outside of Norwood to complete a line-digging assignment in association with the US Forest Service.

The fire line dug during the trip was used for a prescribed burn to protect nearby homes, ranches, trails, and resources.  Given the drought and devastating fire season during the summer of 2018, along with 12th grade students, Flynn Krueger and Lydia Hagan, who completed internships with the US Forest Service last summer, we felt that this option was the most pertinent choice for a service trip to give back to our community.  

Accompanying the students on the trip was Travis Wolf, a US forest ranger who works as assistant head of recreation with the US Forest Service, and served as Flynn and Lydia’s supervisor this past summer.  The students continued the theme of service and volunteered at the Second Chance Humane society in Ridgway with the guidance of former TMS parent Ashley Bradley.

In addition to the fire line digging and Second Chance Humane Society visit, students spent a day completing a CPR/First Aid class with Emil Sante at the Telluride Fire Station.
