During the week of September 23rd through September 27th, 5th/6th grade, TMS students set out on a 45-mile canoe expedition down the Green River in Labyrinth Canyon, Utah. Before departing on their expedition, students learned about the geology of the area while studying maps and charting their trip. They also learned about the history of the area and John Wesley Powell’s first expedition on the Green River.

After camping on Monday night in the Moab area, students outfitted at Tex’s Riverways and were dropped off at their launch site in Ruby Ranch. Over the five day trip, the students developed not only their understanding of ecology and paddling skills but also teamwork as they averaged nearly 12 miles a day.

Highlights of the trip included lessons on the Colorado Plateau’s geology and canyon formation, a day hike up Bowknot Bend, and backcountry nights illuminated by a full moon. So that their memories wouldn’t fade as quickly as our desert tans and paddle-calloused hands, they filled their journals with reflections, sketches, and stories from our trip.

From cooking nutritious meals to rigging boats, the students participated in all aspects of the expedition. They learned to put their own desires aside and help take care of the group. In short, they learned what it means to be part of a successful expedition.
