As for Montauk, there are too many reasons to list that make this hamlet at the eastern tip of Long Island so special. Fifty years ago, Edward Abbey wrote Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness, about the incomparable canyon country surrounding Moab, Utah. And twenty years ago, the Telluride Mountain School was founded. Two momentous anniversaries that have shaped the lives, minds, and hearts of so many in our mountain community! The Telluride Daily Planet recently wrote that, “Edward Abbey has been lionized—defied even—as a master of prose, champion of wild places, eloquent curmudgeon, desert anarchist and pioneering monkey-wrencher.” That sounds somewhat like TMS students: they are certainly masters of prose and champions of wild places—and our goal is to help them shape the future the way Abbey shaped ours! And while we won’t name them, there may be an eloquent curmudgeon or two floating around in the faculty.
Desert Solitaire challenged old ways of thinking about wilderness. At the Mountain School, students are inspired to ask why, what, where. (Example: Are there really ghosts?) We encourage them to think outside the box, to challenge norms and conventions, and to pursue passions. Our curriculum cultivates love, wonder, and care for the planet: What is wrong with dining on spotted owl, eagle hearts and tiger toes even if it is with Edward Abbey’s ghost?
